This Privacy Policy explains how YT Transcript (“we,” “us,” or “our”), available at yttranscript.org, collects, uses, and protects information when you use our website and YouTube transcript tool (the “Service”).
Information We Collect
We designed this Service to work without accounts, sign-ups, or passwords. Specifically:
- YouTube URLs you submit. When you paste a video link and click “Get Transcript,” that URL is sent to our server and then to the third-party services described below so we can retrieve the transcript. We do not require or ask for any personal information to use the tool.
- Standard server logs. Like virtually all websites, our hosting provider automatically logs technical information such as IP address, browser type, referring page, and timestamps for security and troubleshooting purposes.
- We do not collect payment information. The Service is free and does not process payments.
How We Use Information
We use the information above solely to:
- Process your transcript request and return results to you;
- Temporarily cache transcript results so repeat requests for the same video load faster and place less load on third-party services;
- Maintain the security, reliability, and performance of the Service;
- Diagnose and fix technical problems.
Third-Party Services We Use
To generate a transcript, the video URL or ID you submit is shared with one or more of the following third parties, depending on which transcript source is active:
- TranscriptAPI.com — retrieves YouTube’s official caption data.
- Google Gemini API — an AI model that may be used to generate a transcript directly from the video.
- YouTube (oEmbed) — used to retrieve the video’s public title, channel name, and thumbnail.
Each of these third parties processes data under its own privacy policy, which we encourage you to review. We do not control, and are not responsible for, their data practices.
Cookies and Advertising
Our website may use cookies required for basic technical functionality (such as WordPress’s own operation). If and when we display advertising through Google AdSense or a similar network, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. This may include personalized advertising unless you opt out.
- You can learn more about how Google uses data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- Where required by law (including for visitors in the UK and EEA), we will request your consent before loading advertising cookies via a consent banner.
Data Retention
Fetched transcripts may be temporarily cached on our server to speed up repeat requests for the same video. Cached copies are automatically deleted after a limited period; we do not retain a permanent history of the videos you’ve looked up tied to your identity, because we don’t collect an identity to tie them to.
Children’s Privacy
This Service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of personal data we hold about you (such as server log data). Because we do not collect identifying account information, most requests can be handled by removing relevant log entries associated with your IP address. To make a request, contact us using the details below.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect information transmitted to and from our Service, including using HTTPS encryption. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date.
