There’s more than one way to turn a YouTube video into text — they just differ wildly in how much time they take. Here are the three real options, so you can pick the right one for what you’re doing.

Method 1: Watch and Type It Yourself

Play the video, pause every few seconds, and type out what’s said. It’s exactly as slow as it sounds — often taking several times the length of the video itself.

Use this when: you need to transcribe a very short clip and don’t have access to any tool. Otherwise, there’s rarely a good reason to do this manually anymore.

Method 2: Turn On YouTube’s Captions and Copy Them by Hand

YouTube has a built-in transcript panel (usually under the “…” menu below the video). You can open it and manually select and copy the text in chunks.

Use this when: you only need one specific line or quote, and you’re already watching the video anyway.

The downside: there’s no one-click “copy all,” no download option, and no way to search within it — for anything longer than a quick quote, it gets tedious fast. (We cover this in more detail in YTTranscript.org vs. YouTube’s Built-In Transcript.)

Method 3: Use an Automated Tool

Paste the video’s link into a transcript tool and get the whole thing as text in seconds, formatted and ready to use.

  1. Copy the YouTube video’s URL.
  2. Paste it into YT Transcript.
  3. Click “Get Transcript.”
  4. Copy the result, search it, or download it as TXT, PDF, or DOCX.

Use this when: you want the full text of the video — which, honestly, is most of the time.

A Note on Accuracy

However you convert a video to text, the result is only as accurate as the captions (or your own typing) it’s based on. Auto-generated captions can mishear words, especially with accents, background noise, or fast speech — so for anything where exact wording matters, it’s worth a quick check against the original video.
